I had this shot in mind since my first time visiting this incredible beach on the West side of Oahu. Makua Valley is 100 percent off limits to the general public for, after Pearl Harbor in 1941, the US military ordered Marshall Law and forced all Native Hawaiians and residents to leave their homes so military live-fire training could take place. Thousands of bombs were dropped in this sacred valley and, still to this day, the military wishes to continue "testing" on this sacred land.
In 2001 a settlement was reached to stop the bombing of this valley however, even after eighteen years, residents are still not permitted to return to the valley for, in 2015, two maintenance men were killed in an explosion. Makua Valley is known to still contain hundreds, if not thousands, of active bombs lying dormant - it could be decades before this incredible land is given back to the residents of Oahu.
